The Virtual RIP module

The VRIP design follows the VARP module, The reason is that these two modules acts the same way ; each maintains a table, expires old entries and send requests. Both of them also, listens to the incoming packets and process them by updating the maintained table or by replying when the received packet is a request that the interface can or have to answer to. So we have two processes implemented by the VRIP module ;

• The VRIP primary daemon : It is an interface-dependent process spawned for every new interface and takes part of the interface-dependent network stack. The main role of this submodule is to process VRIP messages received by the interface.

  The VRIP messages processing follows the standard RIP specification ( please refer to the RFC 1058 for more details about the RIP protocol ).

• The VRIP scheduler : This process is global and common for all interfaces. It is spawned when adding the first interface to the router. The role of this process is to expire VRIP entries and send periodically the entries of the local VRIP table to all the neighbouring gateways.
